Valentine celebrated Ender's eighth birthday alone, in the wooded back yard of their new home in Greensboro. She scraped a patch of ground bare of pine needles and leaves, and there scratched his name in the dirt with a twig. Then she made a small teepee of twigs and needles and lit a small fire. It made smoke that interwove with the branches and needles of pine overhead. All the way into space, she said silently. All the way to the Battle School.

I'm sure you've heard before that this is the science fiction book for those who don't like science fiction. I can now tell you that is a 100% accurate recommendation for this book. Not only is this story filled with puzzles, tests, and imagination, it is fresh and new, due to the fact that the book is written from the point of view of an eight-year-old. In this book you are sure to find all sorts of exciting, 'grown up' situations, as well as human child emotions, which were so ripe in our younger years, that sometimes we forget about them. This book reminds you of your childhood, while showing the forced process of growing up too quickly to face brutal reality at the same time. Ender is forced to overcome all the challenges his adult 'mentors' put before him, testing his character, morals, and emotional endurance. In the end... Well I'm not going to say, but all in all, this was a fabulous book!

"Took your time, didn't you Graff? The voyage isn't short, but the tree-month vacation seems excessive."
"I prefer not to deliver damaged merchandise."
"Some men simply have no sense of hurry. Oh well, it's only the fate of the world.... Never mind me. You must understand our anxiety. We're  here with ansible, receiving constant reports of the progress of our star ships. We have to face the coming war every day. If you can call them days. He's such a very little boy."
"There's greatness in him. A magnitude of spirit."
         "Killer instinct, too, I hope."
         "Yes."

I really liked this book a lot. It was really confusing in the beginning though, mostly because of the monitor  I still don't understand why they made him wear that. I think the plot was very interesting too. My favorite parts of the book was I think the passages at the beginning of each chapter because I liked knowing how the supervisors thought of Ender. I would recommend this book to anyone. I honestly thought I wouldn't like it but then I soon could never put down the book. I would love to read the sequel.

Ender took off his headphones, filled with the cheers of his squadron leaders, and only then realized that there was just as much noise in the room with him. Men in uniform were hugging each other, laughing, shouting;others were weeping; some knelt or lay prostrate, and Ender knew they were caught up in prayer.

This book was overall a good read. In the beginning, it started out a little confusing but once I got to when he was in battle school, it got  more interesting. I loved the twist in the end, its a solution that I never would have predicted. I would suggest this book to people who like science fiction.

It was what Bonzo was waiting for, the confession that he was in power. For other boys, it might have been enough that Ender had submitted; for Bonzo, it was only a sign that his victory was sure.

I think that it shows what most of the people Ender had to deal with while in battle school. It shows the side of them that comes out when the students were trained to kill.

The snake began to unweave itself from the rug again, only this time ender didn't hesitate. He stepped on the head of the snake and crushed it under his foot. It writhed and twisted under him, and in response he twisted and ground it deeper  into the stone floor.

It is effective because I can picture what the passage is talking about in my mind.

Blog Post #5 (FINAL BLOG)

1.  Always title your blog post with the PAGE # (this will help others avoid reading spoilers).
2.  For your FINAL blog- you can choose ANY section from the book.
3.  Blogs will have 2 parts- Part 1:  passage from the book  Part 2:  commentary
4.  Don't forget to comment/interact with your peer's posts!
5.  You CANNOT choose the same passage as someone else- the first one to post claims it!

For your final blog, you can choose from ANY WHERE in the book.  You are going to do a sort of book review.  Your first paragraph should still be a passage from the book but your FAVORITE passage.  It might be a particularly well written section, or the most exciting part, or a great cliffhanger.  For your second paragraph you do not have to analyze this passage but rather write a paragraph long book review.  Let us know what this book is like and pitch it! If you weren't a huge fan, think about what kind of person might like to read this book.  This should be a STRONG paragraph- not a sentence or two!
